Debt Counselling in S.A.
Since the debt counselling review process began in June 2007, more than 123 000 consumers had applied for debt review by the end of October 2009. (Peter Setou – NCR)
In May 2008, the monthly repayment from consumers under debt counselling was just R8,96 million.
By August 2009 payments from consumers under debt counselling had leapt to R97 million.
By September it grew another R10 million a month to R107,7 million.
in October those receiving debt counselling paid R125,84 million back to creditors in that month alone.
Debt Counsellors have been able to achieve massive benefits to both creditors and consumers.
Repayments made by consumers amounted to just over R1,7 billion this year!
Consumers are urged to go for debt counselling if they felt stressed.
If you are already having to skip one repayment so that you can meet another, this is a clear signal that you are over-indebted and that you should contact a debt counsellor.
You may voluntarily approach a debt counsellor for help if you believe you are over-indebted (see “How to make contact if you need help”, below).
You may also be referred to a counsellor by either a creditor or the magistrate’s court if a creditor takes legal action against you.

On average, South Africa had 9,000 – 10,000 new applicants for debt counselling each month.
